Stanleys–I Guess I Kind of Get It?
Erin Vanderstelt
Trends are so weird. They come in and out with no warning. One day, something is cool, and the next, it is beyond outdated. While some things are welcome throwbacks—Uggs are back (!?)—some are less welcome …low-rise jeans can stay in the early 2000s, thank you very much.
One trend that changes seemingly once or twice a year is the way to carry liquid. First it was Nalgenes, then HydroFlasks, then Yetis. Now, one brand has taken a hold of the beverage container scene—enter the Stanley Cup. No, not the hockey one, though that one is arguably more important. This thing, this literal cup, has gained a cult-like following, and it is not just because it keeps your drink hot or cold—right?
First things first: what exactly is a Stanley Cup? Just kidding, you know what it is; I am not going to waste time explaining it to you. Trust me, you have definitely seen this thing somewhere.
So, instead, I will ask, “why?” Is it the style? Just following a trend? Actual functionality? Wanting to look cool? Whatever you are doing, whether that be hustling through a hectic day of classes or just chilling in your dorm, the Stanley Cup seems to be made for the chaos of student life. It is a cup that refuses to be just a cup—it does seem to be a statement, a lifestyle.
The trend of Stanley Cups has taken social media by storm. My Instagram feed is often flooded with snapshots of these things nestled beside laptops, textbooks, and scenic views. Everyone fights over the latest colour or even keeps the packaging to memorialise its purchase. They do know that it simply is a cup, right? One day, make a little mental note of how many you see around campus; it is honestly entertaining.
Now please do not misunderstand: I have no hatred towards these cups. I myself love getting “the new water bottle to change my life”—if you know you know. I just cannot seem to understand the hype behind these ones specifically. To each their own, I guess. Have fun brawling in Target for the next new colour.
While it is a massive trend, the Stanley Cup seems to be a little bit more than that; it is a commitment to sustainability. In a world grappling with environmental crises, the reusable nature of this cup has become somewhat of a badge of honour (or slightly legitimate justification) for its users. No more disposable cups piling up in landfills; the Stanley Cup is here to save the day, one sip at a time.
While this is a legitimate reason to purchase any kind of reusable water bottle, it still is amusing how major of a trend this has become. So, whether you are a seasoned Stanley enthusiast or are contemplating joining the ranks, know this: the trend is not just about a cup; it is a lifestyle—at least that is what they want you to think. Getting a Stanley will change your life: you are going to have it forever and ever and…. Wait, what is an Owala? You have got to be kidding me…
